Bertelsen is a professor of social anthropology at the University of Bergen and the Academic Director of the Holberg Prize. In his research, Bertelsen has published extensively on urban and structural forms of inequality, dynamics of violence in (post-) war settings and multiple forms of political protest. Mozambique, Ghana and southern Africa are areas in which he has carried out fieldwork and research collaborations.

Bjørn Enge Bertelsen is actively involved in different research projects at GRIP. Bertelsen was also the Executive Director of GRIP from 2019 to 2022.
