We are pleased to announce that Don Kalb, GRIP Academic Director, will be delivering a keynote address at the Exploring Racial Capitalism: Critical Romani Studies in Central and Eastern Europe conference on October 20, 2023.
In his keynote address, titled “Capitalism is not just an economy; and racial capitalism is a tautology: On the dialectics of value in capitalism, and on ‘double devaluation’ in particular,” Kalb will explore the dialectics of value in capitalism, and the traditions of thinking that misrecognise the lives and labour of “marginal populations” such as the Roma as the outside to capital. He will argue that capitalism is not just an economy, but a highly dynamic and uneven social system constantly on the move (“value on the move”) that produces excess and surplus and then absorbs this again. And since it is a type of (class) society, it will involve its variously “classed” subjects, sometimes passionately and always “authentically,” in the double devaluation and revaluation processes that continually constitute it.
The Exploring Racial Capitalism: Critical Romani Studies in Central and Eastern Europe conference is a three-day event that will bring together scholars, activists, and community members to explore the intersections of race, capitalism, and Romani studies in Central and Eastern Europe. The conference will feature keynote addresses, panel discussions, and workshops on a variety of topics, including:
