The University of Bergen, in cooperation with international partners, is hosting a conference Winds of Change and Streams of Solidarity: Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe in the 21st Century, 4-5 September 2023. One of the conference keynotes will be given by Karina Batthyány, member of the Governing Board of the International Science Council (ISC). Batthyány’s keynote will address the role of social sciences and humanities in the quest for a more just and equitable society and will be held on Monday 4th of September.
Karina Batthyány is the Executive Director of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO). Doctor in Sociology, she is a Professor of the Department of Sociology of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Universidad de la República (Uruguay) and an advisor to several international organizations including ECLAC, UN Women and the ILO. She is the author of numerous publications on the topics of social welfare, gender, public policies, unpaid work and care.
The conference “Winds of Change and Streams of Solidarity” aims to focus on the overall common possibilities and challenges for Latin America, the Caribbean, and for Europe in the foreseeable future. The conference will gather academics, practitioners, policymakers, civil society, and other stakeholders, trying to advance the conversation, the knowledge and the insight in order to find joint solutions to common questions.
The academic committee for the conference has selected interlinked themes of particular interest for discussion and analysis such as culture and arts, democracy, environment and technology and heath with water as a transversal theme.
