GRIP’s 2023 Annual Report: Advancing the Global Dialogue on Inequality

The Global Research Programme on Inequality is proud to present its 2023 Annual Report, highlighting a year of impactful research and strategic developments that have furthered our mission to address the complex and interconnected nature of global inequalities.

Reflecting on a transformative year, the 2023 report underscores GRIP’s commitment to understanding and confronting inequality in all its dimensions—economic, social, political, legal, cultural, historical, and spatial. With the gradual receding of pandemic-induced disruptions, GRIP set a new agenda, integrating ongoing research with fresh initiatives that respond to the heightened political and humanitarian urgency surrounding global and local inequalities.

As we review the past year’s achievements, we are proud of the dedication and expertise of our global network of researchers, collaborators, and community partners. Their unwavering commitment has been central to advancing GRIP’s research agenda and ensuring that our work continues to inspire meaningful change in addressing global inequalities.

A cornerstone of our efforts in 2023 was the focus on labour and inequality, examining the evolving dynamics of labour relations in the context of global capitalism. The completion of the ‘Frontlines’ project marked a significant milestone, offering new theoretical insights into class and capitalism while proposing a global ethnographic approach to understanding inequality in contemporary society.

GRIP also played a crucial role in shaping global discourse through key events, such as the Annual GRIP Lecture and our contributions to the Bergen Exchanges and the SDG Conference Bergen. These engagements brought together leading scholars and practitioners to explore pressing issues, including the global care crisis and the role of law in social transformation.

As we look ahead, GRIP remains committed to addressing the urgent challenges posed by rising illiberalism and the green transition, themes that will shape our research agenda in the coming years. Our participation in the establishment of a working group on social inequality under the auspices of the International Science Council further elevates our impact on the global stage.

The 2023 Annual Report is now available for download. We encourage researchers, university administrators, and stakeholders to explore the report and engage with the critical issues it presents as we continue our collective efforts to address inequality worldwide.
