As the world grapples with the urgent challenge of climate change, the green transition towards renewable energy sources has become a cornerstone of sustainable development. The global political landscape for the past two decades has been dominated by the rise of illiberalism. Illiberalism, often arriving in disguise of far right-wing populism to an increasing degree, is also interested in the higher-education sector. Universities are often seen as easy targets for illiberalism as they are subject to heavy regulations and often highly dependent on public funding. Tackling the Rise of Illiberalism session, therefore, explored questions that include the following: - What challenges do illiberal practices pose to universities? - What kind of reforms the sector is experiencing under illiberalism? - What does it mean to be a scholar/student under a rising far-right regime that often implies shrinking freedoms? - What are the possible responses and forms of resistance by academia? GRIP in collaboration with the Centre for Care Research (HVL) hosted a seminar at Bergen Global. Leading experts and scholars convened to discuss the multifaceted dimensions of the ongoing "Crises of Care" in the Nordic countries. The seminar tackled crucial aspects of care, from its existential significance to its political implications and the challenges faced by the care sector in the Nordics. The panellists (Heidi Haukelien, Hanne Marlene Dahl, Halvard Vike, Lise Widding Isaksen, Anette Fagertun) shared their insights on pressing issues surrounding care work, the welfare state, and the racialisation of the care workforce. The discussion highlighted the profound importance of care in human life, the commodification and politicisation of care work within the Nordic welfare state context, and the shifting perspectives on care in recent years. It also contrasted the Nordic perspective on care with that of other regions such as the United States and the United Kingdom, and explored the impact of neoliberalism and the disappearance of the commons on the care crisis. The seminar concluded with a reflection on the future of care in the Nordics, acknowledging the multifaceted nature of the crisis and the need for innovative solutions. This seminar provides an overview of the Nordic care landscape, the welfare state, and the future of care work. It provides valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities facing the region, and raises important questions about the sustainability of the Nordic welfare model.
The inaugural GRIP Lecture, delivered by esteemed global labour historian Marcel van der Linden on May 31, offered valuable insights into the historical trajectories of socialist and labour movements. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with the expertise of van der Linden, who shared his vast knowledge and research on the subject. Accompanied by insightful commentary from scholars Göran Therborn, Svati Shah, and Ernesto Semán, the lecture provided a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by these movements and the strategic choices they have made throughout history. By revisiting the past, the lecture aimed to shed light on the potential lessons that can be learned for the future.
👩🏽‍🤝‍🧑🏽Participants: Nelly Bekus (University of Exeter), Elina Troscenko (GRIP), Tariq Dana (Northwestern University, Qatar) and Mari Norbakk as moderator (CMI). 🗣This roundtable discusses recent political protests and revolutionary movements and explores the role of citizenship in politically charged and volatile contexts. Political protests can be seen as manifestations of people’s demands for change in the face of growing inequalities and, whether leading to actual change in civic rights or not, protests nonetheless leave a mark by changing the social fabric of societies in myriads of ways. Even in situations of fleeting change, there are lingering traces of new ways of doing citizenship. The social contract is renegotiated as citizens experience violence, transgressions, or even expulsions from the state, as well as solidarity, empowerment, and visions of a different future. In such experiences, peoples’ conceptions of citizenship may shift radically, as well as state practices of it. Analyses of political protests and their aftermath therefore provides a unique opportunity to gain novel insights into new vocabulary of justice, innovative practices of political engagement and changing forms of citizenship. This roundtable will look at political protest movements in Middle East and Eastern Europe and explore the various ways how citizenship is re-negotiated in such critical historical moments. 🤝This event is part of a GRIP-CMI project on Political Inequalities (CMI-UiB fund grant). 👋The Bergen Exchanges is an annual event taking place in Bergen in August each year. It is a meeting place for scholars and practitioners from across the globe who seek to understand how law serves as an instrument of change – and how it shapes and is shaped by power relations.The multi-disciplinary and international nature of the Bergen Exchanges makes it a unique space for improving research strategies and methods to grasp the effects of law and lawfare.
GRIP hosted this session at Day Zero Bergen 2022, in relation to the new book “Leaving No Child and No Adolescent Behind” edited by Sudeshna Chatterjee, Alberto Minujin and Katie Hodgkinson. The book shines a spotlight on the world’s most vulnerable children and adolescents, living in poverty and exclusion. “Leaving No Child and No Adolescent Behind” draws on experiences from some 35 countries and provides an in-depth analysis of rich empirical evidence while reflecting on the meaning of ‘inclusion’ for children and adolescents who are often left behind. It reminds us that SDG targets and goals cannot be met unless we focus attention on pockets of inequity and deprivation. The book also provides unique insights on how knowledge, information, data collection, measurement and monitoring make the realities of children’s and adolescents’ lives more visible. Book launch at Bergen Global 24 November 2021. https://gripinequality.org/ https://www.bergenglobal.no/ Thera Mjaaland’s book “Revolutionary Struggles and Girls’ Education: At the Frontiers of Gender Norms in North-Ethiopia” present the gender norms that do not necessarily change even though women participate in liberation struggles and girls get access to education. The book sees this issue in relation to prevailing neoliberal development discourse where gender equality is understood as parity between girls and boys, women and men, and does not touch upon deep-rooted and hard-lived relations of power in the case of gender and sexuality. Based on the central role that education has gained in the forwarding of development, this work also asks how exactly education can change anything when based on rote learning/memorization and does not encourage critical thinking. Given the current political developments in Ethiopia, this anthropological monograph has also (unintendedly) become a historical document about what is now being lost in the ongoing civil war in Tigray.
